iny Homes are a growing trend. I can burn through a day binging on HGTV’s Tiny House Hunters. While the concept can appear crazy initially, downsizing is a trend that is sure to catch more steam in the future. Millennials seem to find the concept particularly appealing. I like the idea that a younger generation isn’t infatuated with debt or materialism. Whether or not you like the concept, there is a lot of good information to be gleaned by watching programs on space utilization. All that it takes is a few episodes of House Hunters International, House Hunters New York or San Francisco, and you realize that you can live well with less space. It is all about what trade offs you are willing to make.
What the Tiny Home shows do not show you, is how difficult it is to find a place to park one of these tiny dwellings. Few cities have zoning that is favorable to these miniature homes. Hopefully things will change in the future. In the meantime, I have included a link to the American Tiny House Association http://americantinyhouseassociation.org/. This is a great source of zoning across the US and FAQ’s. It is the best place to start your search.
